Charlie and the Chocolate Factory @ Lunt Fontanne Theatre

Debuted on April 23, 2017 this broadway musical interpretation of the beloved Roald Dahl’s children’s book and the 1971 classic film, starring Gene Wilder, is one of the more playful and colorful pieces of theatre to hit Broadway this year. Children and parents alike will enjoy the two-part act that takes viewers on a journey through the candy factory and lucky finders of the “Golden Tickets” as they pass through the factory. The story behind each of the characters is given a modern twist on Broadway with social commentary being made on technology and pop media.

The lovable character, Charlie Bucket, is played by three child actors, all of whom are all making their Broadway debuts (Jake Ryan Flynn, Ryan Sell, and Ryan Foust).

Anastasia @ Broadhurst Theatre

This story strays from the animated version of Anastasia, as it follows a brave young woman as she attempts to discover the mystery of her past, set upon the backdrop of Paris and Bolshevik Russia during the 1920’s. The modern interpretation has new characters, 16 new songs, and a Terrence McNally book to convey more historical realism. Debuted March 23, 2017, the play has already received several nominations for awards including, but not limited to, Outstanding Actress in a Musical, Outstanding Costume Design, and Outstanding New Score.

School of Rock @ Winter Garden Theatre

Andrew LLoyd Webber’s School of Rock opened on December 6, 2015 and has become a favorite on Broadway and beyond. For anyone who saw the hit 2003 movie, starring Jack Black as Dewey Finn, you’ll know what to expect from this crowd-pleaser. It’s the story of a struggling rock guitarist who takes a job as a substitute teacher to help pay the bills. Once he arrives to the classroom, things don’t go as planned when he strays from the syllabus and ultimately enters the students into a Battle of the Bands.

School or Rock has proved so popular with audiences that it had its London debut last fall while a US national tour kicks off Fall 2017.

Lion King @ Minskoff Theatre

Based on the 1994 Disney film, The Lion King has been on Broadway since November 13, 1997, making it the eighth longest running show in Broadway history. Of the over 70 million people worldwide who have viewed the play, many say the highlights include the visual artistry, moving music, and vibrant colors. There have been 24 global productions, with a launch in the Philippines scheduled for 2018. Finally, The Lion King has received 70 international awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Aladdin @ New Amsterdam Theatre

Another Disney inspired musical on Broadway is none other than Aladdin. With the lovable cast of Aladdin, Jasmine, The Genie, and the less-than-lovable character of Jafar– the show promises to entertain, impress, and amuse spectators. The Broadway interpretation of the story of a street smart commoner struggling to feed himself on the street of Agrabah, when he comes across a magical genie who grants him three wishes. The performance deviates from the film by replacing Aladdin’s monkey companion, Aboo, with three male friends that each have distinct characters who accompany him as he strives to win the hand of Princess Jasmine.
