NHL Ice Hockey

Posted by Vanessa Lotz | November 6, 2017 | Sports

There’s nothing better than an evening spent with friends, bundled in your favorite winter coat, and surrounded by happy fans and the sound of ice skates cutting across the ice of a hockey rink. Attending an Ice Hockey game is just as fun and exciting as a football or basketball game, and we guarantee you have more than a few clients who would love to catch a game while traveling or staying in town.

The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded in 1917 and includes 31 teams, 24 from the US and 7 from Canada. Each year, the best team in the league takes home the coveted Stanley Cup, which is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. The sport has evolved from its days of aggressive play without face or body guards to a sport that boasts sophisticated gear and highly trained athletes.

Want to know what matchups promise the most excitement? We suggest one of the top ten rivalries, listed below.

  1. Flyers vs. Penguins
  2. Islanders vs. Rangers
  3. Capitals vs. Penguins
  4. Bruins vs. Canadiens
  5. Blackhawks vs. Kings
  6. Ducks vs. Kings
  7. Blackhawks vs. Blues
  8. Kings vs. Sharks
  9. Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs
  10. Oilers vs. Flames

Biggest news of the year

The brand new team out of Las Vegas, Nevada: The Las Vegas Golden Knights.

New kid on the block this year is the Las Vegas Golden Knights National Hockey League Team, making it the first new team to be added to the league in 17 years. (For a brief history of the expansion of the NHL, click HERE). While Las Vegas manages to be a lot of things in one city, it has never been a sports town. But all that is changing now that the city in the middle of the desert is home to its very own ice hockey team, joining the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the NHL.

Watch the team’s series on Facebook Watch to take a look at the what it’s like to be a new team in the NHL.

Special Games

NHL 100 Classic

December 16, 2017 @ TD Stadium, Ottawa, Canada

In celebration of the National Hockey League’s 100th Birthday, the Montreal Canadiens will face-off against the Ottawa Senators at TD Stadium in Ottawa, Canada. The evening will be an extra-special event as it is the same matchup that was played on December 19, 1917, it will take place just outside the birthplace of hockey, and coincides with Canada’s 150th birthday and the 125th year of the Stanley Cup.

NHL Winter Classic

January 1, 2018 @ Citi Field, Queens, NY

The tenth NHL Winter Classic will take place on January 1, 2018 at Citi Field in Queens, New York. On New Year’s day the New York Rangers will face the Buffalo Sabres in one of the league’s few outdoor games, which promises to be one of the highest attended games of the season. The NHL Winter Classic was the first outdoor game to be featured in NHL, and as a result of its immense popularity, several other outdoor hockey games, like the Canadian Heritage Classic, have been organized as annual events. The first team home team to ever win a winter classic was in 2010 when the Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers.

Due to the fact that this is an outdoor event played during winter, wind and sun glare have proven to be hazardous to the game. To combat any unfair advantage one team may have over another, the NHL will sometimes modify the third and overtime periods, or stop play to allow teams to switch directions.

NHL All Star Weekend

January 27-28 @ Amalie Arena, Tampa Bay, FL

The 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Games will take place on January 27-28 at Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, FL. Highlights of the weekend include the NHL All-Star Skills Competition and the Honda NHL All-Star Game. This is the third year in which a 3-on-3 tournament format will be practiced. What this means is that there will be three 20-minute games played among the league’s best players from the Pacific, Central, Atlantic, and Metropolitan divisions.
