The Kentucky Derby

The 143rd “Run For the Roses” gets underway on Friday, May 5, at Churchill Downs; the world’s most legendary racetrack, located in Louisville, Kentucky. For many, the name of this race conjures up images of women in extravagant hats, freshly stirred mint juleps, and horses- of course, the most athletic and well-groomed race horses from around the world.

The Kentucky Derby stands as the longest running sporting event in the United States. Something to keep in your back pocket for the next Tuesday Trivia night is that the track was envisioned and developed by Meriwether Lewis Clark, the grandson of William Clark of the famed Lewis and Clark duo. With some help from the Lewis Clark family and local race fans, the Louisville track slowly took shape. On May 17, 1875, the first Kentucky Derby was held with a crowd of about 10,000, and Aristides was the first winner of the race.

Fast forward to 2017, and fashion is arguably running a close second to the horse race itself. Scroll below to find dress codes and tips, for ladies and gentlemen alike.

Now, why does this matter to you? Because The Kentucky Derby is one of THE events to be seen at and share photos from on social media, and NOW is the time for hopeful attendees to purchase tickets and make arrangements.

What kind of folks are likely to be interested in the event? Lots! From yuppy groups of friends, to fashionista couples, to classic gamblers, to weekend ‘getawayers’, to the ’deep-pocketed’ clients wanting to schmooze in “Millionaires Row” and to the celebrities, sports stars, CEOs and politicians who can afford $14,750 for a spot in “The Mansion.”
