The Masters

The 81st edition of The Masters gets underway on April 6th at the majestic Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Early favorites include recently ranked #1 golfer, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy & Jason Day. 2015 champion Jordan Spieth will be looking to rebound from last years meltdown when he let a final round five stroke lead evaporate, due to a quadruple bogey on the 12th hole. In the 3 Masters Tournaments, Spieth has appeared in, he has never placed worse than second overall. British professional, Danny Willett is also expected to defend his crown as is 4-time champion, Tiger Woods.

“A Tradition Unlike Any Other”, The Masters, began in 1934 when Bobby Jones was making his return to golf & wanted to create the ultimate showdown at Augusta National, the club he founded and helped design with Alister MacKenzie. Gene Sarazen helped put the tournament on the map with his double eagle and playoff win in 1935. In 1949 the first green jacket was presented to Sam Snead after his victory and so the pursuit begins.

The Augusta National Club House still hosts some of the athletes during the tournament. One of the oldest traditions at the tournament, 5 amateurs who are accepted, can sleep at the top of the clubhouse. Do not confuse this with luxury because the entire room, also known as the Crow’s Nest, is 30x40ft and separated into 4 rooms. There is a bed in each room except one, where there are two twin sized beds. The only rookies to ever conquer The Masters and stay at the Crow’s Nest are Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw and Tiger Woods.
