Any visitor to New York City, whether making a first or 50th trip, has Broadway on their mind. While classics like Hamilton, The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Wicked, and Jersey Boys (among many other greats) never fail to impress, a recent flurry of newcomers have locals and visitors abuzz with excitement over rave reviews of previews.

Read on for a highlight of our top picks of the new kids on the block:

Frozen

In recent years, Frozen, has been hands down Disney’s most successful and widely embraced new film. The 53rd Disney animated feature opens as a Broadway Musical on March 22, 2018 at the St. James Theatre, and is already being praised as family favorite that both children and parents can enjoy. While the story of the fearless princess who enlists the help of an iceman, snowman and reindeer, to break the kingdom from an eternal winter spell stays the same, in true Broadway form, new songs and plot twists guarantee that fans of the film will still be able to enjoy a few surprises during the two-act performance. What makes this adaptation especially special is the the film’s original songwriting team stepped up to the plate to write the new songs themselves.

Mean Girls

Based on the 2004 Tina Fey film, Mean Girls, has already proven itself by raking in over $1 million in the first seven previews. Production officially opens on April 8, 2018 at the August Wilson Theatre, and the unique backstory on this Broadway Musical is that while actress, Tina Fey, wrote the book, her husband, Jeff Richmond, wrote the music. The play has been updated to reflect the climate that is 2018, providing a platform to crack jokes about bullying, election tampering and other current events and gossip.  And while we’re all excited to check out the musical on a Wednesday evening dressed in Pink (because, on Wednesdays we wear pink), we have one request for you, stop trying to make “fetch” happen.

The Iceman Cometh

If you’re fan of, Denzel Washington’s work, then it doesn’t matter whether Broadway and Theater are your thing, because the two-time academy award winner and tony award winner packs all of his stage presence and intensity into one of the more unique roles to hit Broadway this spring. The 3 hour and 50 minute Eugene O’Neil production follows the main character, Hickey, through an arduous attempt to help his old drinking buddies. The Broadway adaptation will be directed by five-time Tony winner, George C. Wolfe, and officially opens on April 26, 2018 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, for a 14-week limited engagement ending on July 1, 2018. And for those of you wondering how Denzel landed a Tony, it was in 2013 for August Wilson’s Fences, in which he played opposite Viola Davis.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated film-to-stage productions is that for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. After a wildly successful run in London, the play based off the beloved book series opens at NYC’s Lyric Theatre on April 22, 2018.

The stage adaptation picks up where Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows left off, with the main cast of characters going about their daily lives (as parents) in the Magical Realm of Hogwarts. As the plot thickens, the three school-friends reunite to fight the evil dark forces that always lurk behind the corner.

Pretty Woman

Starring Broadway favorites, Samantha Barks and Steve Kazee, Pretty Woman: The Musical, promises to sweep audiences off their feet in the romantic story of unlikely soulmates who find themselves by finding each other. The performance opens on August 16, 2018, after previews startingJuly 20, 2018 at the Nederlander Theater.
