Rose Bowl History & Timeline
The Rose Bowl was first played on January 1, 1902 as the first postseason college football game, ever. Thus, it is college football’s original “bowl” game, graced with over a century of college football tradition.
1890: Pasadena holds the first Tournament of Roses Parade to boast what beautiful weather the area has during the winter months, a time when the East Coast is shrouded in rain and snow.
1902: The Tournament of Roses Parade adds the first post-season football game. The first game was a match between the West Coast’s Stanford against Midwestern Michigan
1922: In 1922, the Rose Bowl, which stands today, was built to house the football Tournament of the Roses. It has since hosted many other events, including Super Bowls, the 1984 Olympic games, and more.
1946: Things became official in 1946, when the Rose Bowl was contracted to be the official contest between the Big Ten (New Jersey to Nebraska) and Pac-12 (Arizona to Washington) conferences. The pact is the oldest intercollegiate postseason bowl agreement between two major conferences in the United States.

Since 2015, the Sugar Bowl, along with the Rose, Orange, Cotton, Peach, and Fiesta bowls, has been in the rotation of the “New Years Six” bowls, which host College Football Playoffs.
The Sugar Bowl is the annual college football game played on January 1; the same day on which the Rose Bowl is played. The 2018 College Football Playoff Semifinal, at the Allstate Sugar Bowl, will begin at 8:45pm EST, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, LA.
History
By 1935, there was enough support to put on the first Sugar Bowl. The game was played in Tulane Stadium, which had been built in 1926 on Tulane University’s campus (before 1871, Tulane’s campus was Paul Foucher‘s plantation, where Foucher’s father-in-law, Etienne de Bore, had first granulated sugar from cane syrup). Warren V. Miller, the first president of the New Orleans Mid-Winter Sports Association, guided the Sugar Bowl through its difficult formative years of 1934 and 1935.
Tulane Stadium hosted the game from 1935 through 1974. It has been played in the Louisiana Superdome since 1975, other than in 2006, when the Sugar Bowl game was played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia because of the extensive damage the Superdome suffered as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The Sugar Bowl has since returned to the refurbished Superdome.
The game traditionally hosted the Southeastern Conference (SEC) champion against a top-tier at-large opponent usually a Big 12 or ACC team, an arrangement nearly identical with the relationship between the Rose Bowl and the champions of the Big Ten and Pac-12.
Parking
Parking in the Superdome garages is $25, cash only, upon entry on game day, on a first come, first served basis. The garages will open at 2:30pm.
