Super Bowl LII — Championship Football in 2018

On February 4, 2018, the Philadelphia Eagles will face the defending champions, the New England Patriots, in the 52nd NFL Super Bowl in Minneapolis, Minnesota. U.S. Bank Stadium will cater to a crowd that is projected to fill the 70,000-person capacity stadium, which serves as the home of the Minnesota Vikings. This is the second Super Bowl held in Minneapolis, following Super Bowl XXVI in 1992.

The Eagles-Patriots matchup offers plenty of excitement for both storied fan bases and serves as a rematch from Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005 when the New England Patriots prevailed in a close 24-21.

Super Bowl LII will be the Patriot’s tenth Super Bowl appearance overall, the third appearance in the last four years and most remarkably the eight appearance of the Belichick/Brady era. They are currently heavy favorites to win this Super Bowl, but the injury of their star tight end, Rob Gronkowski, might lessen those odds if he is unable to play.

The Eagles on the other hand will be making only their 3rd Super Bowl appearance in franchise history and have embraced the underdog role (which is why you will see fans in the stands sporting dog-masks). All but written off after star quarterback, Carson Wentz, injured his ACL in December, the Eagles have thrived thanks to backup quarterback Nick Foles and one of the league’s best defenses.

In addition to the much-anticipated concert by pop sensation Kelly Clarkson at the 52-live pre-game party right before the start of the Super Bowl, Imagine Dragons, Jennifer Lopez , P!nk and Dave Matthews Band are all scheduled to perform in the days leading up to Sunday’s big game. Perhaps the most anticipated act, though, is Justin Timberlake, who is headlining the Super Bowl LII halftime show.

Travel Information for the 2018 Super Bowl

Most people attending Super Bowl LII will fly into Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), which is just 10-minutes from the downtown areas of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Plenty of taxi companies run visitors to and from the airport, with pickup stations situated on the Tram Level at Terminal 1 and the Ground Transport Center at Terminal 2. App-based ride-sharing services, including Lyft and Uber, are also available; order via your app as usual and meet your driver in the pickup areas designated by airport signage. Van, limousine and shuttle services provide both luxury private and group transportation to hotels and other key points in the greater Minneapolis area and surrounding cities.

For more travel freedom, car rental companies, including Advantage Rent a Car, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty, have on-site rental facilities with customer counters in both terminals. Public transportation is available as well; the light-rail transit (LRT) whisks passengers from 17 city destinations to stops at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, running every 10 minutes during peak travel times and every 15 minutes otherwise. Metro Transit’s city bus service drops off and picks up passengers on the Upper East Roadway, and there is a Jefferson Line stop for anyone wishing to continue their trip to outer Minnesota destinations and beyond.

A Quick History of the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl dates back to 1960, when the creation of the American Football League (AFL) instigated a rivalry with the already-existing National Football League (NFL). There had to be a way to determine which team from which league truly reigned supreme. A proposed merger that would join the two leagues in 1970 gave birth to what then-owner of the Kansas City Chiefs called a “Super Bowl.” The name stuck.
